Formerly known as the ATP World Tour, the ATP Tour comprises of three major events ATP Masters 1000, ATP 500 and ATP 250. ATP rankings are published each week based on the performance of the players. Top eight singles players and doubles teams of the ATP rankings feature in the annual tournament, ATP Finals. ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) governs all these four tournaments currently.
Recognized as one of the "Big Titles" along with Olympics, Grand Slams and the ATP Finals, is the ATP Masters 1000. As the name suggests, 1000 points are awarded by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) to the winners. A total of nine tournaments are played. North America and European tournaments were there since inception, Shanghai Masters of China was included in 2009. The nine tournaments are Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Monte-Carlo Masters, Madrid Open, Italian Open, Canadian Open, Cincinnati Masters, Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters. Novak Djokovic has dominated in ATP Masters since 1990, he has 37 titles to his name. Also, he has won the Career Golden Masters, an honour given to a player who wins all the nine tournaments in the course of their career, twice. He is the only player to pull off that feat.
The fourth highest tier of men's tennis, ATP 500 comprises of 13 tournaments. The tournaments are held in all the continents except Africa and Antarctica. Rotterdam Open, Rio Open, Dubai Tennis Championships, Mexican Open, Barcelona Open, Queen's Club Championships, Halle Open, Hamburg European Open, Washington Open, China Open, Japan Open, Vienna Open Swiss Indoors make the ATP Tour 500. Winner of each tournament is awarded 500 points. Draws of 32 and 48 are held for singles, and 16 and 24 are held for doubles. Winning 24 titles, Roger Federer holds the record for most singles titles. Daniel Nestor's 20 titles is the highest in doubles' category.
ATP Tour 250 are a collection of 39 tournaments which act as stepping stones to Grand Slam for upcoming tennis professionals. The tournaments are conducted in places where tennis is looking to prosper, like Kazakhstan, Russia, China, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, India, Turkey and Qatar. Nearly half of the turfs are clay, providing an opportunity for the players to prepare themselves for the French Open.
